Selling your home is a big transition in your life. Not only do you have the house sale to deal with,
planning for the moving truck, and trying to find time to get everything done while your “regular” life (job, family, activities) marches on with no mercy. There are a few things you can do when you sell your house to make this time easier on you and your family, so that everything goes (almost) according to plan.
- Make sure everyone has an overnight bag. That first night in a new place is going to be chaos – it’s unavoidable – and having your medications, a change of clothing, and toiletries handily available makes all the difference.
- Plan for more time than you think. Everything involved to sell your house and to move takes longer than you’d expect. Make sure you have ample time allotted, and free time off work, to sign papers and take care of other details.
- Allocate money for food – those final days before (and after) moving are going to be hectic so you’ll likely have several pizza or Chinese take-out nights. Make sure there’s wiggle room in the budget to cover these costs.
- Give away unneeded furniture – offer these items to friends or family so you don’t have to take them to the dump. Any unwanted items can also be donated to organizations such as The Salvation Army, who pick up free of charge.
Every little thing you do to make moving easier will make a big difference in how in control you feel throughout the process. Selling your house can be an emotional time, so don’t forget to practice good self-care as well!
